Bandages, the cold pack, the CPR mask. Then there is the middle of the kit, the supplies that quietly do most of the actual work and that nobody thinks about until they are gone.

August is a good month to look at that middle. Late summer is peak season for outdoor work, seasonal staff, camps, events, and the kind of minor injuries that empty a kit without anyone noticing, and it lands just before the autumn stretch when workplaces get busy again and restocking falls off the list. So this month First Aid Canada is featuring four supplies that earn their place in almost any kit, along with what each one is actually for, because the difference between them matters more than most people realize.

Povidone iodine, for cleaning a wound properly

Povidone iodine antiseptic solution is the workhorse antiseptic in a well built kit. At a ten percent concentration it is a topical germicide used for preparing and caring for a wound site, disinfecting skin, and helping prevent infection in minor burns, cuts, and abrasions. It is effective against a broad range of organisms, including gram positive and gram negative bacteria, fungi, viruses, bacterial spores, protozoa, and yeasts.

The value it adds is straightforward. Most workplace injuries are small, and most small injuries only become serious when they get infected. A cut that happens on a job site, in a kitchen, in a shop, or out in a field is rarely clean, and covering a contaminated wound with a bandage does very little on its own. Cleaning it first is what changes the outcome.

For kits where a bottle is impractical, povidone iodine antiseptic prep pads do the same job in single use foil sachets. They are non irritating and close to sting free, which matters more than it sounds when the patient is a nervous employee or a child at a camp, and they keep the kit tidy since nothing can leak. Vehicle kits, portable bags, and multi location workplaces tend to be better served by the pads, while a first aid room with a sink is a good home for the bottle.

Rubbing alcohol, and where it belongs

Isopropyl rubbing alcohol at seventy percent is one of the most commonly stocked and most commonly misused items in first aid. It is a fast acting antiseptic for disinfecting skin and surfaces, and it is genuinely excellent at that.

The distinction worth understanding is that alcohol and iodine are not interchangeable. Alcohol is best used on intact skin, on instruments, and on surfaces. Pouring it into an open wound is painful and does more harm to the tissue than good, which is why the antiseptic for the wound itself is povidone iodine and the alcohol stays for everything around it. Wiping down tweezers before removing a splinter, preparing skin before a procedure, cleaning a thermometer or a pair of scissors, or disinfecting a work surface after treating someone are all exactly what it is for.

Alcohol antiseptic swabs are the portable version, made of non woven pads saturated with the same seventy percent solution and sealed individually. They belong in every kit, because the instrument that gets used on skin should be clean, and nobody carries a bottle in a waist pack.

Understanding the split between these two products is one of the more useful things a workplace responder can learn, and it costs nothing to teach.

Gauze pads, the item that always runs out first

Sterile gauze pads in a ten by ten centimetre size are the most versatile thing in the kit and the item most likely to be missing when someone opens the box. They are absorbent, breathable, and soft, and they cover three separate jobs.

They clean, when used with saline or an antiseptic to wipe debris away from a wound. They control bleeding, when folded and held under firm pressure, which is the single most effective first aid action for most bleeding injuries. And they dress, when taped or wrapped over the wound to protect it once it is clean.

That versatility is exactly why they disappear. One decent cut can use several pads across those three stages, and a kit stocked with a handful is a kit that runs dry during a single incident. First Aid Canada’s practical advice here is to stock deeper than feels necessary and to keep a backup box outside the kit, because there is no realistic scenario where a workplace regrets having too much gauze.

Suture removal kits, for the part after the hospital

A sterile suture removal kit is the item most workplaces have never considered, and it fills a real gap. The three piece tray contains surgical scissors, fine point plastic forceps, and a gauze sponge, packaged sterile and ready to use.

The gap it fills is the follow up. An employee gets stitched up after an injury, returns to work, and then needs those stitches removed a week or two later. For an organization with an on site nurse, occupational health team, or clinical staff, having a sterile tray on hand means that appointment happens in house rather than costing the person another half day away. Health care facilities, larger industrial sites with medical staff, remote camps, marine operations, and anywhere far from a walk in clinic are the settings where this quietly saves the most time.

It is worth being clear about scope. Suture removal is a task for someone qualified to do it, not a general first aid skill. The kit is there so that the qualified person has sterile instruments when the time comes, rather than improvising with whatever is in the drawer.

How the four work together

Taken individually these are small purchases. Taken together they describe a complete approach to the most common injury a workplace will ever see.

Someone gets cut. Alcohol cleans the instrument and the skin around it. Povidone iodine cleans the wound. Gauze controls the bleeding and then dresses it. And if that injury turned out to need stitches, the suture removal kit closes the loop a couple of weeks later. Four inexpensive items, one continuous chain of care, and each link matters.

That is also the argument for treating consumables as a standing order rather than an emergency purchase. Gauze, prep pads, and swabs are used and thrown away by design, which means the only way a kit stays ready is if somebody restocks it on a schedule. August, with the fall season approaching, is a sensible time to do exactly that.

Restock this month’s featured supplies and everything else your kit needs at firstaidcanada.com/product-category/first-aid-supplies.

FAQ

What is the difference between povidone iodine and rubbing alcohol in a first aid kit?

Povidone iodine is a topical antiseptic used on the wound itself to help prevent infection in minor cuts, burns, and abrasions. Rubbing alcohol at seventy percent is used to disinfect intact skin, instruments, and surfaces, and is not intended for open wounds. Most kits should carry both, since they do different jobs.

How many gauze pads should a first aid kit hold?

More than most kits are supplied with. A single injury can use several pads across cleaning, bleeding control, and dressing, so First Aid Canada recommends stocking generously and keeping a backup box outside the kit for restocking after use.

What is a suture removal kit used for?

It is a sterile tray containing surgical scissors, fine point forceps, and a gauze sponge, used by a qualified person to remove stitches after a wound has healed. It is most useful for workplaces with on site medical or occupational health staff, remote operations, and facilities far from a clinic.

Every first aid kit has a handful of items that get all the attention.
